Garth Weiser's powerful painting draws on geometric abstraction and the language of graphic design (particularly the corporate logo) interspersed with fanciful, fluid paintwork and richly contrasting surfaces of oil, acrylic, spray-paint and enamels.
Swathes of dense colour, greyscale tonal wheels and delicately arabesque underpainting are held together through tight, considered composition.
Wieser's painting is at least partly an unconventional approach to figuration: the works shown below are both from a series entitled nudes, and with this knowledge the discs at the focal centre of each work begin to evoke breasts or orifices.
This desire to represent in non-representational fashion is shared by a surprising number of artists currently working in abstracted form - Daniel Lefcourt, Katy Moran and Varda Caivano spring to mind - all of whom regard their work as containing figurative elements.
